{"id":1249,"date":"2026-05-30T15:37:27","date_gmt":"2026-05-30T15:37:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sehliglobal.ca\/news\/?p=1249"},"modified":"2026-05-30T15:37:27","modified_gmt":"2026-05-30T15:37:27","slug":"canada-suspends-travel-documents-for-residents-of-drc-south-sudan-and-uganda-over-ebola-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sehliglobal.ca\/news\/2026\/05\/30\/canada-suspends-travel-documents-for-residents-of-drc-south-sudan-and-uganda-over-ebola-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Suspends Travel Documents for Residents of DRC, South Sudan, and Uganda Over Ebola Risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada has announced temporary immigration measures affecting foreign nationals currently living in the <\/span><b>Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Sudan, and Uganda<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to the risk of <\/span><b>Ebola outbreaks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in those countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The measures took effect at <\/span><b>11:59:59 p.m. Eastern Time on May 27, 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and will remain in place until <\/span><b>11:59:59 p.m. Eastern Time on August 28, 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><b>Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, foreign nationals currently living in the affected countries will not be able to travel to Canada during this period, even if they already have approved immigration documents.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What the Temporary Measures Mean<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the new measures, Canada is temporarily suspending certain immigration documents issued to foreign nationals who currently live in the DRC, South Sudan, or Uganda. This means, they will not be able to travel to Canada during this period, even if they already have approved immigration documents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Affected documents include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0temporary resident visas,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electronic travel authorizations (eTAs),\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">temporary resident permit counterfoils, and\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">permanent resident visas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applicants can still submit new immigration applications, and IRCC says existing applications will continue to be processed. However, final decisions will not be issued while the temporary measures remain in place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the restrictions are lifted, valid immigration documents will automatically become active again and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sehliglobal.ca\/book-an-appointment\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">application processing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will resume normally. Applicants will not need to take any steps to reactivate them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Important Exceptions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The measures apply based on an applicant\u2019s country of residence, not their citizenship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means someone who is a citizen of <\/span><b>Uganda<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>South Sudan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or the <\/span><b>DRC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but was living in another country when they applied for their immigration document is not affected by these restrictions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IRCC says affected individuals will receive email notifications if their immigration documents have been suspended. If your document is suspended, it becomes temporarily invalid and cannot be used to board a flight or travel to Canada until the measures are removed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foreign nationals who were already in Canada when the measures took effect are not affected.
