Australia Launches the MATES Visa for Indian Graduates
October 2025 | Immigration News and Insights
In an important milestone for Australia–India relations, the Australian Government has officially introduced the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES) — a new stream under the Temporary Work (International Relations) Visa (Subclass 403).
The MATES visa allows young Indian professionals to live and work in Australia for up to two years, contributing to key innovation and technology sectors — without requiring employer sponsorship.
A Part of the Australia–India Migration and Mobility Partnership
The MATES stream is a core feature of the Australia–India Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement (MMPA).
It is designed to facilitate the exchange of skills, talent, and innovation between both nations while addressing Australia’s workforce shortages in priority sectors such as:
- Renewable Energy
- Mining and Resources
- Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Financial Technology (FinTech)
- Agricultural Technology (AgriTech)
- Each year, up to 3,000 Indian professionals will be selected under this program.
“The MATES visa creates new opportunities for India’s brightest minds to work and learn in Australia while supporting our industries of the future,” stated a Department of Home Affairs representative.
MATES Visa Eligibility Requirements
To apply for the MATES (Subclass 403) visa, applicants must:
- Be an Indian passport holder aged 18–30 years
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher from an eligible Indian university, completed within the last two years
- Have qualifications in one of the targeted fields (AI, ICT, FinTech, etc.)
- Demonstrate English language proficiency (IELTS, PTE, or TOEFL)
- Meet health and character standards
- No job offer or sponsorship is required.
- Dependants can accompany the applicant with full work rights.
Application Process: Ballot and Invitation System
Because of the limited annual cap, MATES uses a ballot-based selection system.
- Register for the Ballot: Interested candidates submit their details during the announced registration period.
- Selection: A random ballot draws names from the pool.
- Invitation to Apply: Selected candidates receive an invitation to lodge a full visa application through ImmiAccount.
- Visa Decision: Approved applicants receive a 24-month visa, allowing them to work, live, and travel in Australia.
The first entry to Australia must be made within 12 months of visa approval.
Key Benefits of the MATES Visa
The MATES stream stands out as one of the most flexible and rewarding work visas for Indian professionals:
- Global Work Experience: Gain exposure to international projects and industries.
- No Sponsorship Needed: Work in any field after arrival.
- Family Friendly: Dependants can work full-time.
- Career Development: Strengthen global employability and explore future migration options.
“This scheme is a perfect stepping stone for Indian graduates looking to build international careers while developing valuable professional networks,” said RCIC Bhawna Satauri.
Conditions and Limitations
While the MATES visa offers flexibility, it’s a temporary visa and does not directly lead to permanent residence.
- Can be applied for only once as a primary applicant.
- Requires entry to Australia within 12 months of visa grant.
- Health insurance must be maintained throughout the stay.
- Applicants should ensure their university is on the approved list of eligible institutions.
Why This Matters for Indian Graduates
For Indian graduates and young professionals, the MATES visa is more than just a travel opportunity — it’s a gateway to global careers.
Australia’s booming sectors in technology, renewable energy, and innovation need skilled young minds. This visa makes it easier than ever for Indian graduates to gain hands-on international work experience, while Australia benefits from their expertise.
When to Apply
The first MATES ballot registration is expected to open later in 2025, with the first arrivals expected by 2026.
Applicants should start preparing early:
- Complete an English test (IELTS/PTE)
- Verify your university’s eligibility
- Prepare educational and identification documents
- Monitor immi.homeaffairs.gov.au for ballot opening announcements
