how to confirm canada-official immigration website
Every year, applicants lose money and time to websites built to look like Canada’s real immigration portal. The fake versions often look polished enough that catching the difference takes more than a glance, and getting it wrong before submitting an application can cost far more than a few dollars on a form that should have been free.
Knowing exactly what separates the real site from an imitation removes most of that risk before it becomes a problem.
What the Official Website Actually Looks Like
Canada’s official immigration information and application portal lives at canada.ca, under the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada section, or on a page ending in gc.ca. Any immigration-related site using a different domain, even one that looks similar at first glance, is not government-run.
Genuine Government of Canada pages also appear in both English and French, since bilingual content is a legal requirement for federal sites. A site offering Canadian immigration information in English only, with no French version anywhere, is already showing a sign the real site would never show.
Payment Red Flags Worth Knowing
Government fees are only ever paid through the official IRCC secure account portal. A request for payment by phone, email, bank transfer, or prepaid card is not how the real system works, no matter how official the request sounds.
Application forms and guides themselves are free on the official site. Any page charging money just to download a form that IRCC provides at no cost is not an official government page, even if it uses government language and imagery throughout.
How Scammers Are Getting More Convincing
Fraud attempts used to be easier to catch through obvious spelling errors or clumsy design. That is changing. IRCC has specifically warned about a rise in AI-generated content built to look like official communication, including fake videos promising guaranteed approvals and fake websites offering immigration advice dressed up as legitimate guidance.
No legitimate source, government or otherwise, can guarantee an immigration outcome. A promise of guaranteed approval is one of the clearest signs something is not what it claims to be, regardless of how convincing the surrounding content looks.
What a Legitimate Consultant Actually Does Differently
Working with a licensed consultant does not replace using the official government portal, and a genuine consultant will never suggest otherwise. Every Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant is licensed through the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants, and that license can be checked directly rather than taken on faith.
A legitimate consultant’s role is preparing a stronger, more accurate application and guiding an applicant through a process that still runs through the real IRCC system from start to finish, not offering a shortcut around it. Understanding how the full process fits together makes it easier to spot a version of it that has been faked.
Our Canada’s immigration pathways across study, work, and permanent residence guide lay out what the legitimate version of that process actually looks like from one end to the other.
What to Do If Something Looks Off
A site, email, or call that raises doubt is worth checking against the official source directly rather than acting on it first and asking questions later. Processing timelines are a useful check here too, since realistic current study permit processing times rarely match the inflated speed many fraudulent sites promise.
Suspected fraud can be reported directly to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, and IRCC maintains its own fraud reporting channel as well. Reporting it does more than protect one applicant, since it also helps flag the same scam before it reaches the next person searching for the same information.
